Basic Photography-What are Digital Camera Pixels?

Pixels dictate the resolution of an image. That is, how much detail we see. The easiest illustration would be how sharp the image will be when it is enlarged. The more pixels in an image, the higher the resolution. Picture resolution is measured in pixels per inch or ppi. 300 ppi is the standard for most cameras. The computer monitor standard for pixels is different. For Windows it is 72ppi. For Mac it is 96ppi. So if you are going to take pictures and know you only want to use it for the computer screen and not for print, you can set your camera for a much lower resolution and still get a great image for your screen.

Pixels determine the maximum enlargement size for a quality print. Lets assume you are shooting at 300ppi.

A 3 Megapixel camera will give you a good 5X7 or smaller print.

A 6 Megapixel Camera will give you a good 8X10 or smaller print.

A 10 Megapixel camera will give you a good 13X8 or smaller print.

These are all approximate values. This information can be valuable when you are choosing a camera. It will also help you determine what size enlargement will give you the best image without losing quality.  Hope this gave you a basic understanding of pixels.
