The thrill of the race has been known to man since time immemorial, if we go by the chariot races of the Romans, or the famous race between the steeds of Norsk god Odin and the giant Hrungnir. The thundering hooves, the sculpted forms flying along the track, and the yells of triumph and disappointment form an intoxicating elixir that has drawn people to the races over centuries and millennia. Already, the emotions invested in the race are extremely high. It is only logical that people, then, should opt to invest more than merely their emotions in the race. This is what brings us to the origins of betting. In horse racing, greyhound racing and all other sports where participants finish in ranks, the betting system followed is called pari-mutuel betting. The word "pari-mutuel" comes from a French phrase meaning "mutual stake". This already gives us one basic rule about the process - the betting pool comes from the total amount of money wagered, and the money won is calculated as a percentage of this quantity after deducting the taxes and house "take". Needless to say, the probability of getting a winning bet is maximized if you bet on the most likely contender, but winnings are the highest when an unknown or unlikely candidate - also known as the "dark horse" - takes the win. There are several methods of placing bets in pari-mutuel betting, some of which are - ? Win - the wager is placed on the animal that wins the race. ? Exacta, perfecta, or exactor - the bettor places a wager on two animals, declaring which will finish first and which second. The result has to be an exact match for a winning bet. If this is carried on to the winning three or four animals, the bet is known as Trifecta or Superfecta.? Place - the wager is placed on an animal that finishes either first or second.? Quinella- This is very similar to the exacta bet, except that the bettor need not specify the order in which the top two animals appear? Show - the animal that has been wagered on must finish first, second or third.? Duet - The bettor picks out two animals, and wagers that they will both be placed among the top three.? Double - the bettor wagers on the animal he thinks will win two successive races. This is called a "running" double or a "rolling" double. If this is extended to three or four successive races, it is called a Triple or a Quadrella(also called "Quaddie").? Box - bettors place multiple wagers, on all possible combinations of a group of animals in the same race. ? Key - the bettor picks one animal to be in a specific position, and a number of other animals to be placed in any combination around it. This is also a multiple wager, and carries the associated higher cost. ? Bets are divided into "straight bets" and "exotic bets". Win, show and place are counted among the former, while all others are classed as "exotic bets". That gets you started with some basic bets for dog racing and horse racing. Certain tracks may have their own specific bets or names for bets, but with these under your belt you can get ready for a nail-biting thriller at the racetrack.Picture Collage Frames for FB, iPhone, iPad and iPod touch

Lotteries have been around for centuries, with some even dating back to Ancient Egypt. One of the first official lotteries took place in 1445 when the Flemish painter Jan Van Eyck got rid of his remaining paintings by holding a raffle. The prize became money in Florence, Italy in 1530, and the word "lotto" means "destiny" or "fate". England quickly followed, with their first lottery held in 1568, during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The prizes for this lottery were china, tapestry and cash. The longest running lottery is in the Netherlands ? it began there in 1727, and has been played ever since!America got in on the game in 1612, with the Virginia Lottery, where profits from the game were put back into the community. Lotteries in America quickly became popular and they helped to fund the Colonial Army fighting for independence from the British in the Revolutionary War. After the war the lottery monies were used to rebuild the damage done during the war. However, they were eventually banned by all states except Louisiana, due to their corruptness. They were instigated again in America in 1964 in New Hampshire, and there are now 38 state run lotteries, and now help fund education and community benefits. The British National Lottery was launched by the government in November 1994 to raise money for heritage, charity, arts and sports. It is run by the Camelot Consortium and of the weekly takings 50% is used as prize money, 28% goes to good causes, 12% is taken in taxes and the remaining 10% is split between Camelot and the estimated 10,000 retailers who sell the lottery tickets. It is approximated that an average of 80% of UK adults play the national lottery, each spending approximately Ò£2.50 a week. The UK lottery is held on Wednesdays and Saturdays and is broadcast on television on BBC One.Lottery tickets cost Ò£1 each and the player has to choose 6 numbers between 1 and 49, which must match at least three of the winning numbers drawn to be eligible for a prize. The chances of winning a prize are around 14 million to one ? quite bad odds really but for those who win the difference it makes to their lives can be quite astounding. Prizes are often in excess of Ò£10 million!!Some people don"t even play the lottery to be in with a chance of winning ? that would be an additional bonus. They play because they know that they are supporting charities and the arts ? in 1997, the National Lottery gave Ò£137 million to museums and galleries across the country. Fighting back from accusations that the lottery gives too much money to the high arts and not enough to charity the government declared that they were going to use some of the lottery profits for the health service and education.Scratch cards are the newest form of lottery, and a lot of people consider them to be more thrilling than playing the lottery. It is not just the National Lottery that deals in scratchcards though ~ you can also play for high stakes online.Research In Coin Collecting - Learning The Value Of The Coins

The object of either game is to predict where on the wheel the white ball will land. Many people think that the numbers are arranged in a haphazard fashion. In actuality the numbers of arranged in an attempt to alternate odd and even numbers, high, low digits along with the red and black colors. Since there is no way for the wheel to be arranged in a true mathematically balanced way, in the American version the green "0" and "00" slots are placed on opposite sides from each other with exactly 18 numbers between them. Plus to even out high and low numbers, the sum of each two consecutive numbers of the same color must equal 37 and even numbers must alternate with odd numbers. The European numbering sequence is completely different. On the roulette table is a heavy felt layout with a printed diagram of the rectangular roulette betting scheme. The American version is printed in 2 or 3 colors with a 0 and 00 at one short side with two other betting areas on a singe long side: inside and outside betting areas. It is a common coin collecting problem: too many coins, not enough information on what kinds of coins to collect, or a disorganized group of collectibles.Sonic and His Enemies
Through his illustrious career, Sonic the Hedgehog has met with many an adversary. Ranging from the usual baddies throughout the levels to the boss enemies. Most of them are quite forgettable when compared to the main few enemies that Sonic has had to deal with. There are actually only three or four memorable characters when it comes to Sonic beating someone up.It all started with Dr. Ivo Robotnik, so it is only fair that this article starts with him. An evil genius, Dr. Ivo Robotnik has but one driving desire in this entire universe. That desire is to take over Mobius (Sonic"s home planet) and make everyone do his bidding. This is of course unacceptable to Sonic and he foils Robotniks"s plans each and every time. Sonic taunts him by calling him egghead and chases him to outer space to stop him from wrecking havoc on his planet.Robotnik is also one of the most intriguing characters within the game. Except for his "take over the world plans" nothing much is known about him. We know what he looks like and we know that he is a doctor. But beyond that we know nothing. Like where he gets all the money from to build all those robots.Robotnik being the mastermind he is, he outsources his work to a robot called Metal Sonic. This is an evil robotic twin of Sonic and does bad things in Sonic"s disguise. He is of course stopped by Sonic who grinds him down. Metal Sonic is actually the predecessor of Mecha Sonic - another robot twin of Sonic built by Robotnik. The main concern here is the fact that Mecha Sonic tricks others in to believing that all that destruction is being caused by Sonic himself. The epic battle between Sonic and Mecha Sonic makes a lasting impression on all gamers who are Sonic fans and have played the games.Mecha Sonic also paves the way for another super strong adversary - Knuckles the Echidna. As the last surviving member of the ancient race of Echidna, he is also the paranoid guardian of the Chaos Emeralds and the Master Emeralds. He is ready to fight anyone who looks like a threat to the emeralds he so jealously guards. Robotnik tricks him through Mecha Sonic and makes him believe that Sonic is the one who is after the emeralds. The Echidna believes him and goes off to fight Sonic whilst Robotnik gets busy stealing the Emeralds for himself. Thankfully, the Echidna is not entirely devoid of intelligence and soon joins forces with Sonic to fight Robotnik. Knuckles is as dangerous an enemy as he is powerful as an ally. The relationship between the Echidna and Sonic could"ve been one of strong friendship amongst equals had the circumstances been different. But given his paranoid nature, it has always been a love-hate relationship. So he is not to be counted amongst the full time enemies of Sonic. Thus, the criminals within the Sonic games also form a memorable part of the classic games.Spotting Fake Autographs
ÂStamps Collecting has Never Been So Easy
Collecting stamps has been a popular pastime ever since there were stamps to collect. Collecting stamps has never been easier and collecting isnò€™t just for the gray-haired gentleman who spends his days poring over his stamps.Swords From the Ancient Dynasties
Defence is a major preoccupation for any ruler - from the rulers of way back in antiquity to President Obama today. Times of war see resources being drained toward a wasteful expense, as well as major scientific advancements as people try to find out why things happen, and how to mitigate the injuries caused by bad things. In the ancient Chinese dynasties, warfare was undoubtedly complex, but the complexities took a different form. While today we bomb strategic locations, in those days swordsmen developed ever-finer instruments and techniques. Here is a quick run-through of the popular swords and sword-making techniques in the Han, Song, Qing and Ming dynasties. First, the Hans. The Han dynasty"s rule spanned from 206 BC to 220 AD. The early period of Han rule saw the rise of steel as the material preferred in swords. Both single-edged(dao) and double-edged(jian) swords now began to be made of steel, with bronze swords falling rapidly out of favor. The process of differential heat-treatment also took birth during Han rule. Sword blanks were now forged and folded, with ring pommels being introduced. In middle and late Han rule, this differential heat treatment process was developed further, and became the art of "refining". Swords were now manufactured in layers, with the top, core and bottom being made separately and then welded together. At this point, China began to export swords to Korea and Japan. Fast-forward across nearly a century, and you reach the Song dynasty in 960 AD. During the reign of Song emperor Shenzong, swordcraft reached new and unprecedented heights. Assessment bureaus were set up to determine the quality of weapons, and a manual on quality control in weapon manufacture was written and circulated. Ring pommels, discontinued in the middle Tang period, was revived by Shenzong. Also, the Zhanmadao - a horse-chopping sword - was created to help soldiers fight against cavalry. Sword blades were now imported from Damascus and Japan. Late in the Song period, Japan was invaded by the Mongols. It was during this period that they realized how much continental blades were superior - though stouter and less fine - than their own blades. The Ming dynasty, ruling from the late fourteenth to the mid seventeenth century, saw China importing Japanese Wodao swords on a mass scale. Smiths came to prefer non-clay methods of heat differential treatment, while the Damascus-native process of making twist-core steel reached China"s wordsmiths. The Japanese shinogi-zukuri - a ridged cross-section used in single-edged swords - became popular once more, as the Chinese faced repeated attacks from Japanese pirates. The 2-meter long changdao saber, modeled on the Japanese pirate nodachi, also acquired prominence. Overall, the Chinese art of sword-making declined, only to be revived later on in the Qing dynasty. Under the Qings, handicrafts as well as sword-making received a much-needed boost. The dao and its characteristics were standardized, while a document on "Weapons Workmanship Standards" was also compiled. The niuweidao - the oxtail single-edged sword - also made an appearance, but was used by civilians and not the military. Today, swords of all these dynasties and more are available, though only as collectors" items. Each sword has a unique historical motivation behind it; the more you know, the more you want to know more. The Best Way To Fund Your Prom Night?
